New Delhi: The Income Tax Department has on June 30 cancelled the tax exemption status of the Delhi-based Centre for Policy Research, The Hindu reported.The I-T Department had conducted a ‘survey’ at the CPR’s office September 7, 2022. In February 2023, the Union home minister had suspended the Centre’s Foreign Contributions (Regulation) Act license, which allowed it to receive donations from abroad.CPR has maintained that it is compliant with all tax-related laws and is also cooperating with the authorities in their investigations.In May this year, the Delhi high court had stayed the income tax proceedings against CPR.CPR is at present chaired by former Jawaharlal Nehru University professor and political scientist Meenakshi Gopinath.Yamini Aiyar is its president and chief executive. Among other board members are former foreign secretary Shyam Saran, IIM Ahmedabad professor Rama Bijapurkar and Supreme Court advocate Shyam Divan.Several renowned scholars from India and abroad have criticised the government action against CPR, saying it will come in the way of independent research in India.
