Shillong: The chief minister of Meghalaya and president of the National People’s Party (NPP), Conrad K. Sangma filed nomination papers from South Tura assembly constituency. The by-election for the same would be held on August 23.Conrad K. Sangma’s sister, Agatha K. Sangma evacuated the seat earlier this month permitting her brother to contest for the position in West Garo Hills district.The MP from Tura Lok Sabha seat, Conrad K. Sangma, was sworn in as the chief minister on March 6 post the victory of NPP-led coalition in the state.As he did not contest the February 27 assembly polls, his election to the state assembly is mandatory before September 6. The result of the by-poll will be declared on August 27.As Sangma failed to contest the February 27 assembly polls, his election to the state assembly is compulsory prior September 6.“I am excited about the elections. Every election is tough and I hope that people of South Tura will give me an opportunity to be their MLA,” he informed reporters after filing the nomination papers.He emphasised on the requirement to improve infrastructure of Tura town, which according to him is the “de facto headquarters” of Garo Hills division.Prior to his visit to the office of the deputy commissioner to file nominations, he visited his father, Purno A Sangma’s grave to pay his respects.The by-polls to South Tura and Ranikor assembly seats in the state will be held on August 23 and the results to which would be declared on August 27 as announced by the Election Commission.
