New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi in a virtual address on Tuesday distributed appointment letters to over 70,000 people selected for various government jobs and said that there are ample employment opportunities available in India in both the private and public sectors.Modi, while talking at the ‘Rozgar Mela’, said that his government has provided employment opportunities at an unprecedented scale and claimed that the main sources of government employment like SSC, UPSC and the Railways have hired more people than before. The unemployment rate in India – that reached a 45-year high at 6.1% in 2017, merely three years after the Modi-led government took charge – is currently at 8.11% as of April 2023 according to the Centre for Monitoring Indian Economy (CMIE). Modi said that the recruitment cycle for government jobs used to take a year or longer and could get dragged on for more than five years if the courts were involved. However now the process is completed within a few months and with more transparency. Meanwhile, the candidates selected for SSC GD 2018 recruitment for constables in the Central Armed Police Forces had not received their appointment letters till as late as 2022, The Wire had reported. Modi’s address gradually veered away from employment and moved on to issues of governance and his government’s overall performance in the last nine years. He said that India is now a more stable, safer and stronger country than it was a decade ago and that decisiveness has become the identity of the Indian government. “There has never been such confidence for our economy in the past,” he said, adding that despite global economic slowdowns, the COVID-19 pandemic and supply chain disruption due to Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, the Indian economy has managed to reach new heights. He claimed that older governments were known for political corruption, malpractices in schemes, and misuse of public funds. “Today, India is known for its political stability which means a lot globally and the Indian government is recognised for its decisiveness,” he said.Without naming any particular entity, Modi claimed that ‘global agencies’ have estimated that India is performing better than the previous governments on all fronts from construction of highways, railways, ease of doing business and ease of living.
