Nitin, from Punjab’s Mansa district, is a second-year MBBS student at the Medical University in Chernivtsi, Ukraine.When he migrated to Ukraine in December 2020, Nitin told The Wire, the atmosphere was peaceful. But in the last few months there was panic due to the Ukraine-Russia crisis, and so he decided to come back home on February 21.Nitin’s father, Rakesh, said they had been trying to get him back ever since they realised that tensions were escalating. “We’re relieved that our son is back with us. But government should do more for those who are stuck there,” he added.The Wire also spoke to Nitin’s friends, Aadish Nagar, on video call. Aadish, from Rajasthan, is currently in Kyiv. The special flight he was supposed to leave on was cancelled.
