One of the boldest voices in Israel has spoken out in strong terms demanding an immediate end to the continuing Israeli airstrikes over Gaza and adding that the allegedly imminent ground invasion must not happen at all cost.Gideon Levy, the internationally acclaimed columnist for Israel’s Haaretz newspaper, says that Israel and the world must accept that the idea of a two-state solution is dead and impossible to revive.Instead, he says, the only feasible solution is a one-state solution where Israelis and Arabs, Jews and Muslims have equal rights. Although neither politicians nor public opinion in Israel are ready to accept this, Levy says they have to realise, no doubt with time, that this is the only solution. He also says that Israel’s Western friends, particularly America, must start pushing them in this direction.Unfortunately, this is the opposite of the message President Biden delivered when he visited Israel earlier this week.Levy says there have to be limits to the devastation and that although “it’s impossible to let (what Hamas did) pass without settling accounts” nonetheless, “there’s a vast middle ground between doing nothing and massive bloodshed that has no point or purpose”.Levy says the present airstrikes, which are continuing not just in the north but also in the south of Gaza, which was supposed to a safe area, with 53 people killed overnight, have “no clear realistic purpose and certainly no answer to the question of what happens on the day after.”He is also concerned that this continuing bombing of Gaza could have a terrible impact on the people of Israel themselves. He says “Even in the heat of our anger and frustration, we must not lose whatever remains of our conscience and moral compass. We must not let all of Israel become Hamas.”Speaking about the ground invasion, which is believed to be imminent, Levy adds this would exacerbate the problem, possibly even resulting in a world war. A ground invasion that kills hundreds or thousands of Palestinians and, perhaps, tens or hundreds of Israeli soldiers, is likely to provoke Hizbullah and even Iran to enter the conflict. That, in turn, could lead to American intervention. And, as Levy put it, this could lead to a world war. However, Levy dismissed the possibility raised by Yuval Noah Harari in a recent Washington Post op-ed that, if critically pushed, Israel could use the atom bomb. Levy said the ground invasion must not happen.Watch the interview here.
