At least 34 people were killed when two Russian ballistic missiles struck the centre of the northeastern Ukrainian city of Sumy on Sunday. The missiles hit at around 10:15 a.m. local time (0715 GMT) while people were gathering to celebrate the Christian feast of Palm Sunday, DW has reported.“On this bright Palm Sunday, our community has suffered a terrible tragedy,” acting Mayor Artem Kobzar was quoted as having said in a statement on social media. “Unfortunately, we already know of more than 20 deaths.”Ukraine’s air force later said that 43 drones of 55 launched by Russia overnight had been destroyed by Ukrainian air defences. Russia’s defence ministry claimed 12 Ukrainian drones were destroyed over the Rostov region and one over the Belgorod region, according to DW.Ukrainian president Volodymyr Zelenskyy has condemned the attack and called for the international community to respond. He has also thanked global leaders who have posted messages of support in posts.“68 people injured in the attack are currently in medical facilities, 8 of who are in serious condition. Doctors are doing everything possible to save lives and preserve the health of the wounded,” he wrote in a post on X.“It is crucial that the world does not stay silent or indifferent. Russian strikes deserve nothing but condemnation. There must be pressure on Russia to end the war and guarantee security for people. Without truly strong pressure, without sufficient support for Ukraine, Russia will continue dragging this war out,” he added.
