New Delhi: Indian-origin New York Mayor Zohran Mamdani has said that if he had to speak to the United Kingdom’s King Charles III, he would probably encourage him to “return the Koh-i-Noor Diamond.”Charles is on a four-day diplomatic trip to the US to mark 250 years of American independence. On April 29, along with Queen Camilla, Charles visited Mamdani’s city, in what was the first visit to New York by a reigning British monarch in 16 years. The two visited the site of the September 11 attacks, met with schoolchildren and business titans and socialised with celebrities.Among the crowd at the memorial were Mamdani, along with New York Governor Kathy Hochul and New Jersey Governor Mikie Sherrill.Mamdani – who was born in Uganda to parents from India, both former parts of the British Empire – shook hands with the king, and the two appeared to greet each other warmly. They spoke only for a few seconds.Earlier in the day, Mamdani said he hoped to keep the event’s focus on 9/11 victims and not pursue a political conversation. But pressed by a reporter, Mamdani had said that if he were to speak with Charles under different circumstances, “I would probably encourage him to return the Koh-i-Noor diamond.”The gem, one of the largest cut diamonds in the world, is part of the Crown Jewels. Stolen by the East India Co. after the Second Anglo-Sikh War of 1849, it was given to Queen Victoria and is on display in the Tower of London.(With inputs from AP)
