New Delhi: Warsaw mayor Rafal Trzaskowski, who is largely described as a centrist and liberal, is narrowly ahead in the first round of Poland’s presidential election.Trzaskowski, from the ruling Civic Coalition (KO) party, got 30.8% of the vote, according to the exit poll reported released late on the night of May 18 and reported on by DW.Trzaskowski told his supporters at a rally in Sandomierz, southern Poland, according to BBC: “We’re going to win.”He has also promised to cooperate with prime minister Donald Tusk’s coalition to liberalise the country’s strict abortion law and accelerate reform of the politicised Polish judiciary, BBC noted.Trzaskowski, has, however, fared worse than how opinion polls said he would before the vote. He was expected to be 4%-6% ahead of nationalist historian Karol Nawrocki.Nawrocki who is backed by the right-wing opposition party Law and Justice (PiS), got 29.1% of votes.The outcome of the presidential election will determine whether the Tusk government can take forward its plans, which have been stymied by PiS president Andrzej Duda since the government was elected about 18 months ago.Runoff elections in the European country are scheduled for June 1.
