New Delhi: India on Monday (March 30) condemned recent attacks on UN peacekeepers in Lebanon that left three Indonesians dead and injured three others in two incidents over the past 24 hours, amid Israel’s ground incursion and intense fighting between Israeli forces and Hezbollah militants. “We condemn the recent attacks on UN Peacekeepers deployed in UNIFIL, and pay our homage to the fallen Blue Helmets,” a statement issued by India’s permanent mission in New York said.On Sunday night, an Indonesian peacekeeper was killed when a projectile exploded near a position of the UN Interim Force in Lebanon near Adchit Al Qusayr in southern Lebanon. Another peacekeeper was critically injured.UNIFIL stated that it was not aware of the origin of the projectile which killed the peacekeeper on Sunday, but it had launched an investigation. On Monday, two more UN peacekeepers from Indonesia were killed in an explosion of unknown origin in southern Lebanon. Another peacekeeper was critically injured and a fourth sustained injuries.India is the fourth largest contributor to UNIFIL with 642 troops, after Italy, Indonesia and Spain.India in its statement described UN peacekeeping as “multilateralism in action, implemented by UN Peacekeepers who are deployed with the backing of an international mandate in conflict areas and under difficult conditions”.Urging all parties to ensure the safety and security of Peacekeepers, the statement pointed out that India has been at the frontline of UN peacekeeping and lost the largest numbers to the cause.During its presidency of the UN Security Council in December 2022, India had piloted the Security Council resolution that called for accountability for all acts of violence against UN personnel serving in peacekeeping missions. It also launched a ‘Group of Friends’ on UNSC resolution 2589, which was part of its ‘Protecting the Protectors’ initiative. In its statement, India recalled that resolution 2589 sought accountability for crimes against peacekeepers “which we will continue to pursue”.Peacekeepers serve under difficult conditions and are deployed with the backing of a @UN mandate in conflict areas.Peacekeeping is multilateralism in action.⁰The safety and security of the Peacekeepers must be a priority. Any harm to peacekeepers is unacceptable and undermines collective efforts to maintain peace and stability,” said the Indonesia statement. The ministry also reiterated its condemnation of Israel’s attacks in southern Lebanon and called for respect for Lebanon’s sovereignty, an end to attacks on civilians, and a return to dialogue. After speaking with UN Secretary General Antonio Guteres on Monday, Indonesia’s foreign minister Sugiono called for an emergency UN Security Council meeting and reiterated demand for “swift, thorough, and transparent investigation”.Guterres had warned on Sunday that attacks on peacekeepers are “grave violations of international humanitarian law” and “may amount to war crimes”.Strongly condemning the attack, Guterres’ spokesperson Stéphane Dujarric said, “This is one of a number of incidents that have jeopardized the safety and security of peacekeepers, including over the past 48 hours”.I strongly condemn Sunday’s incident during which an Indonesian peacekeeper of @UNIFIL_ was killed amidst hostilities between Israel & Hizbullah. Another Indonesian peacekeeper was seriously injured in the same incident. My deepest condolences to the family, friends &…— António Guterres (@antonioguterres) March 30, 2026Addressing the media in New York, UN peacekeeping chief Jean-Pierre Lacroix said UNIFIL personnel would remain deployed despite “extremely dangerous conditions”, with the “women and men of UNIFIL” showing “utmost courage and commitment” in carrying out their mandate. He said the UN was investigating the incidents, noting that the origin of the explosion that killed two peacekeepers on Monday had not been determined, and stressed that “peacekeepers must never be a target” and that all actors must ensure their safety and security.Lacroix also reiterated the Secretary-General’s appeal for a halt to fighting, saying that “only the full implementation” of Security Council Resolution 1701 would enable a long-term solution. The violence comes amid a sharp escalation in southern Lebanon since early March, when Hezbollah began firing rockets into northern Israel following Israeli and US strikes on Iran, prompting retaliatory Israeli airstrikes across Lebanon.Israel has since launched a ground invasion of southern Lebanon, expanding military operations and pushing deeper into the border region amid continued exchanges of fire with Hezbollah.Lebanese authorities say over 1,200 people have been killed and more than a million displaced since the latest phase of the conflict began.
