New Delhi: US President Donald Trump has asked Big Tech companies like Google and Microsoft, to stop hiring overseas, including in India.“Many of our largest tech companies have reaped the blessings of American freedom while building their factories in China, hiring workers in India, and slashing profits in Ireland,” he said.At an AI Summit in Washington on July 23, Trump lashed out at what he called the tech industry’s “globalist mindset,” and claimed that some of the top tech companies have made profits using American freedom but have invested heavily outside the country. “Under President Trump, those days are over,” he said, reports India Today.“Many of our largest tech companies have reaped the blessings of American freedom while building their factories in China, hiring workers in India and stashing profits in Ireland, you know that. All the while dismissing and even censoring their fellow citizens right here at home. Under President Trump, those days are over,” he said. “Winning the AI race will demand a new spirit of patriotism and national loyalty in Silicon Valley and long beyond Silicon Valley,” Trump said.“We need US technology companies to be all in for America. We want you to put America first. You have to do that. That’s all we ask,” he added.Trump said he disliked the phrase “artificial intelligence” itself. He said he preferred a name that better highlights its power. “It’s not artificial, it’s genius.”Moneycontrol writes that this is “not the first time Trump has targeted India over tech outsourcing.” In May, he warned Apple that it would face steep tariffs if it continued manufacturing iPhones outside the US. Via a post on Truth Social, Trump had said, “I have long ago informed Tim Cook of Apple that I expect their iPhone’s that will be sold in the United States of America will be manufactured and built in the United States, not India, or anyplace else. If that is not the case, a Tariff of at least 25% must be paid by Apple to the U.S. Thank you for your attention to this matter.”The Guardian reports that three orders were signed by Trump on AI. These executive orders target ‘woke’ AI models and regulation. This crackdown “would streamline the building of datacentres and remove environmental protections.” Just recently, the US has made clear its plans to scrap the H-1B visa lottery for a weighted system, a move that could “reshape how Indian professionals and students approach careers and education in America.” This only multiplies the pressure on India’s tech sector, already weighed down by fewer job opportunities in India and rising unemployment rates for the educated.
