Less than 24 hours after the United States and Iran agreed to a two-week ceasefire – during which Iran’s 10-point peace plan is to serve as a ‘workable’ basis for negotiations towards a lasting agreement – Israel’s frenzied, brutal bombing of Lebanon has placed the entire process in jeopardy. The ceasefire announced by Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif this morning with the concurrence of US President Donald Trump and the Iranian authorities is meant to cover hostilities in Lebanon too but Israeli PM Benjamin Netanyahu immediately announced he was not bound by it. The Israeli military has killed over 250 people in Lebanon in just one day, reports said. The fresh violence threatened to scuttle what US Vice President J.D. Vance called a “fragile” deal.
