New Delhi: Speaking at the 80th United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) on Friday (September 26), Pakistan Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif claimed that Pakistani fighter jets “turned seven Indian jets into scrap” during a military confrontation with India earlier this year.Sharif slammed what he called India’s “unprovoked aggression” and “arrogance” during the conflict between two nuclear neighbours after 26 civilians were killed at Baisaran valley near Pahalgam, Kashmir.Meanwhile, he praised his country’s air force, calling its pilots “falcons” that destroyed India’s aircraft. “Our falcons took flight and turned seven Indian jets into scrap,” he said.Pakistan has previously claimed that it downed five Indian planes in air-to-air combat after India launched Operation Sindoor, targeting terror bases in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir in response to the Pahalgam terror attack.“India sought to extract political gain from a human tragedy by spurning my sincere offer of an independent international investigation into the Pahalgam incident. Instead, it attacked our cities and targeted our innocent civilians,” Sharif said, as quoted by DW.The conflict de-escalated after a ceasefire was agreed, which United States President Donald Trump claimed he mediated. Sharif also thanked Trump for his “timely and decisive” intervention and “bold and visionary leadership” that “helped avert a more threatening war in South Asia.”India has denied the suggestions several times that Trump brokered the ceasefire.Sharif went on to claim having “won the war” that Pakistan now wants to “win peace” in South Asia and that it is ready for a “comprehensive and result-oriented dialogue with India on all outstanding issues.”“South Asia requires proactive rather than provocative leadership,” Sharif said.
