New Delhi: Sexual assault accused former Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) MP Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh has come out in support of Unnao rape convict and former BJP MLA Kuldeep Singh Sengar after a recent Delhi high court judgement suspended Sengar’s jail term.Sengar, a former Uttar Pradesh MLA, was convicted of raping a minor in 2017 and later found to be involved in the killing of the vicitm’s father.Last week, the Delhi high court suspended his sentence and granted him conditional bail, paving the way for his release from jail. The move prompted widespread anger and protests from the rape survivor and her family. The Supreme Court on Monday (December 29) stayed the Delhi high court order after significant backlash over Sengar’s potential release. In a podcast conversation with UPTak, Bhushan, while referring to the survivor’s protest, said that “such drama should not happen”.“Who gave the punishment? The court. And who suspended the sentence? The court. When Sengar was sentenced by the court, you liked the decision. Now, when the court has suspended the sentence, you are raising questions on this. This means you do not trust the court,” Bhushan said.On being asked about the gravity of the allegations against Sengar, the disgraced former Wrestling Federation of India (WFI) chief said that the accusations against him were equally serious, yet he did not consider himself responsible.Bhushan also alleged that the allegations against him were part of a global conspiracy while asking where the people, who protested against him, were today. “Nobody pays attention to them now,” he claimed.Bhushan also said that it does not matter how grave the allegations against Sengar are and that there was no question of morality in his jail term suspension. “Morality is overruled by the court. The country does not run on emotions, it is run by the rule of law. The law put him behind bars and the law allowed for his release. That is why these demonstrations and drama should not happen.”While Bhushan asked the decision of the court to be respected, he said that all the allegations against the Unnao MP were wrong, despite the latter’s conviction. “The allegations were part of a conspiracy against him,” Bhushan said.On being asked about his aggressive stance on the matter, Bhushan said that it was because he was also dealing with the fallout of sexual assault allegations and widespread protests against him. When asked why a global conspiracy would be hatched against Bhushan, the former MP was at a loss for an answer.BackgroundSingh was accused of sexual harassment by women wrestlers during his time as the chief of the Wrestling Federation of India (WFI). Women wrestlers had made serious complaints against Singh, including that he demanded sexual favours in lieu of professional assistance, molested them, ran his hands over their breasts and intimidated anyone who tried to complain. Wrestlers held a long protest against him and the Union government and police’s failure to act, including giving up their international and national awards. The police cracked down on the protest. While Olympic medalist Sakshi Malik, who was one of the wrestlers protesting against Singh, quit the sport in December after one of his aides was picked to head the WFI, Singh has continued to enjoy favour within the party. The Wire has reported that he was seen sitting in the Lok Sabha among BJP MPs only a few rows behind Union ministers Nitin Gadkari and Amit Shah as the latter gave his speech on the Women’s Reservation Bill and pledged his government’s support towards women empowerment. While he blamed the media for the delay in naming him as a candidate again from Kaiserganj, the BJP has instead chosen to keep it in the family and by fielding his son Karan Bhushan Singh.
