Trivandrum Press Club Secretary Arrested for Sexually Harassing Journalist

Radhakrishnan allegedly barged into the house of a journalist, accused her of having an extramarital affair and then assaulted her in front of her children

New Delhi: Amid loud cheers and slogans from a group of women journalists, Trivandrum’s press club secretary Radhakrishnan was arrested by the Kerala police on Thursday.

Journalists had been urging the police to arrest him after he allegedly barged into the house of a journalist, accused her of having an extramarital affair and then assaulted her in front of her children.

They had been protesting since Thursday morning at the press club and had staged a sit-in at the press club, saying “NWMI Zindabad.” NWMI is the Network of Women Journalists in India. They also defiantly shouted, “Who are the police?”

He was then arrested from the press club itself, with women cheering as the police took him away. The Kerala Women’s Commission has also registered a case against him.

Dhanya Rajendran, editor of The News Minute, tweeted videos of the women protesting. She expressed support for the protestors, adding, “If you touch one of us, we will retaliate. No longer your fiefdom.”

The women journalists who are protesting have also filed a complaint with chief minister Pinarayi Vijayan and the Kerala Women’s Commission.

Radhakrishnan had allegedly barged into a woman journalist’s house and demanded to know why a man was there. The woman’s husband is also a journalist and was at work that night. Radhakrishnan works in the same organisation as the woman and apparently also shoved her and assaulted her in front of her children.

According to a report in the Times of India, he has been booked for trespassing, wrongful restrainment, assault on a woman and voluntarily causing hurt.
