Noida: Two women journalists have alleged sexual assault by a man in Sector 24 here, police officials said, even as one of the complainants claimed the police “delayed” action which allowed the accused to escape.According to a Facebook post by one of the women, she and her friend, both 24, were sexually assaulted by a man on Monday while they were on their way home in Noida. In her post, the woman alleged that the police did not “act fast”, which allowed the assaulter to escape. She also alleged misbehavior by a constable at the local police outpost and raised concern over the absence of CCTV cameras in the area.A report in the Quint quoted the woman as saying, “After reaching the nearby police check-post, Constable Govind wasted 20 minutes on a futile discussion that we cannot be made to sit inside the police van as there was no female constable present. On our way to the police station, he again wasted time after stopping the van to greet a group of men who appeared to be drunk.” The report went on to say that the group of men the constable spoke to whistled at them.Senior police officials, however, said the complaint in the case has been registered and a probe was undertaken to nab the accused.According to officials, a case has been registered at the sector 24 police station under IPC Section 354 (assault or criminal force to woman with intent to outrage her modesty). The woman also wrote another post stating that UP chief minister Yogi Adityanath has taken “cognisance of the matter and has conveyed he will personally look into the matter.” and that the constable in question had been “suspended from his duties.”Also alleging that he asked them to file the complaint in Hindi, the woman told the Quint that the matter drew attention only because she is a journalist: “I feel the only reason I am getting such a response from the CM and the Union Minister is because I am journalist. There are no CCTV cameras installed in the area where the incident took place. That simply shows how serious they are about women safety. Such an investigation wouldn’t have been required if prior steps had been taken.”Gautam Buddh Nagar senior superintendent of police Ajay Pal Sharma told PTI that the police were getting a sketch of the accused made and making efforts to nab him at the earliest.Meanwhile, the National Commission for Women (NCW) has also sought the details of the matter from the SSP.“The NCW has taken cognisance of the Facebook post detailing the shocking incident of police apathy following the sexual assault of two women journalists in Noida,” an NCW official said.“The commission strongly condemns this incident and has written to the senior superintendent of police, Surajpur, for details of the matter,” the official added.(With PTI inputs)
