New Delhi: A man associated with the Bharatiya Janata Yuva Morcha (BJYM), the youth wing of the Maharashtra government coalition partner Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), has been accused by his girlfriend of physically abusing her and then injuring her severely in an attempt to mow her down with his car.The incident, according to the woman’s police complaint, took place at a hotel in Thane on December 11 early morning. Her complaint said she reached the hotel after the young man, identified as Ashwajit Gaikwad, called her there to attend a family function. According to news reports, a verbal altercation turned into physical abuse followed by Gaikwad ordering his driver to run the car over her, leaving her severely injured.Following her complaint, the local police filed a case but didn’t accuse him of attempt to murder, nor were he or his associates allegedly involved in her physical abuse arrested. It led her to upload a video clip on social media on December 17 from her hospital bed showing her injuries and accusing the police of working under pressure.Gaikwad, besides being a BJP worker, is also the son of a senior bureaucrat at the state road development corporation. With the video clip going viral, local police has announced setting up a special investigation team (SIT) to probe the case. Thane police commissioner Jai Jeet Singh said on December 17 that the SIT would carry out a “thorough” probe into the incident and it would be led by a deputy commissioner of police rank.Meanwhile, the accused has stated that the driver running the car over the woman’s legs was “accidental”, not “intentional”.
