New Delhi: One of the three women journalists who had alleged sexual assault by Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP) Vivek Bhagat during a protest calling for CEC Gyanesh Kumar’s resignation in the national capital on October 2 has been detained along with several others on October 5, reports on social media say. The Delhi Police is even registering an FIR against the victim who alleged molestation by the ACP, the Cockroach Janata Party (CJP) alleged. The CJP’s legal affairs head Ratna Singh said on X that the Delhi Police was registering an FIR against the victim and others, and is also considering seizing their phones.“This is deeply concerning. People are standing outside the police station demanding registration of an FIR against an ACP in a molestation case. Instead of acting on the complaint, Delhi Police appears to be proceeding against the victim and those demanding action,” Singh said.Delhi Police has said the social media handles claiming that female protesters were assaulted are “baseless and misleading”. In a post on X, DCP New Delhi’s official account wrote, “Female protesters are handled by female staff and are treated with dignity and due regard. Male protesters who were detained were released within the stipulated time period, following due process of law”.According to CJP’s Singh writing on X, “The law is clear – when a woman approaches the police with information disclosing a cognizable offence such as sexual assault or molestation, the FIR has to be registered. An inquiry or investigation into the allegations comes thereafter; it cannot be used as a reason to refuse registration of the FIR.”Earlier, Singh posted on X saying that the journalist and 17 others were demanding the registration of a first information report – something that has still not been done despite the passing of a whole day since the alleged offence.“She has told me that the detainees were assaulted by the police. Two of those detained were allegedly brutally beaten,” Singh tweeted. All 18 are currently detained in Delhi Cantonment police station, Singh noted.“To protect their own, the police are now allegedly beating up the victim and those demanding action against the accused,” Singh added.Activist Yogita Bhayana also noted on X that the journalist was “detained from Parliament Street Police Station and brought to Delhi Cantt Police Station.”The journalist had also been picked up by Delhi Police along with many others in the course of the protests near Jantar Mantar on October 4.A day ago, the Delhi Police acknowledged the allegations of sexual harassment made by three women journalists against the same ACP.“On 03-10-26, during the protest in New Delhi area, while being in law and order situation, allegations of sexual harassment were made by three female journalists against police officers,” said a tweet posted by the Delhi Police handle. “New Delhi District has received their complaints and the same are transferred to Crime Branch for fair and impartial enquiry.”The only acknowledgement so far came after journalists spent the night of October 2 outside the Parliament Street police station, demanding that an FIR be lodged against the officer in question. While the Delhi Police tweet refers to “sexual harassment”, at least one journalist has accused ACP Bhagat of sexual assault, stating in a video that she was groped by the assistant commissioner.Leader of Opposition in Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi had noted a day ago that the police hasn’t fulfilled even their most basic duty, the filing of an FIR.This article is updated with the CJP’s allegation that the Delhi Police is filing an FIR against the alleged molestation victim and republished at 3.53 pm on October 5, 2026.
