New Delhi: A Delhi court on Friday (May 10) ordered the framing of charges against Bharatiya Janata Party MP and former Wrestling Federation of India chief Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh for outraging the modesty of a woman and sexual harassment (Sections 354 and 354A of the IPC).The court of Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Priyanka Rajpoot said there was sufficient material to frame charges, based on the complaints of five women wrestlers. In the allegations levelled by the sixth women, the court said Singh has been discharged. The court also said that the complaints of two women warranted charges under section 506 (1) (criminal intimidation). For Vinod Tomar, former WFI assistant secretary and the second accused in the case, the court said there was sufficient material to frame charges against him for criminal intimidation in relation to the allegations of one victim, The Indian Express reported. The case against Brij Bhushan was filed only after wrestlers protested in Delhi for months, accusing the Narendra Modi government of shielding the accused. Brij Bhushan has denied the allegations. Last month, ACMM Rajpoot had rejected Bhushan’s plea seeking further investigation in the case. While Brij Bhushan has not been given a BJP ticket this time, his son Karan Singh has been fielded from Kaiserganj, the Lok Sabha constituency Brij Bhushan currently holds. The wrestlers who led the protest have expressed anguish at the BJP’s decision. Finance minister Nirmala Sitharaman drew flak for her comment that since Brij Bhushan hadn’t been convicted, the ticket to his son can’t be questioned. Singh’s loyalists also continue to retain control of the WFI.After the court’s order, the opposition Congress demanded that the ticket to Karan be revoked. “The Congress Party demands the immediate withdrawal of the BJP ticket to Brij Bhushan’s son. If the Prime Minister has even a shred of integrity, even a pretense of belief in Nari Shakti, he would immediately condemn Brij Bhushan, and suspend him from the BJP until the verdict in this case is delivered,” party spokesperson Jairam Ramesh said.Today, a Delhi court has ordered the framing of charges against Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh, the BJP’s goonda-MP who has been accused of sexually harassing five women wrestlers, including a minor. The Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate in Delhi stated that the court had… pic.twitter.com/VQKkCg7J0L— Jairam Ramesh (@Jairam_Ramesh) May 10, 2024Women wrestlers had made serious complaints against Singh, including that he demanded sexual favours in lieu of professional assistance, molested him, ran his hands over their breasts and intimidated anyone who tried to complain.
