Following the eruption of communal violence in Nuh, Haryana last week, the police and the administration collectively demolished numerous homes in the Muslim-dominated district. Even social institutions and NGOs are finding it difficult to keep track of the demolished houses. In the vicinity we visited, we spoke with Mrs Khatoon, who resides near the Nalhar Mahadev Temple. Her house was demolished by Nuh authorities.Mrs Khatoon was not alone – her home was not the only one shattered. Alongside her, three more families have been left with shattered homes in this area. Already destitute, these families now lack even basic necessities.Homes were razed without any prior notice, which subsequently prompted the Punjab and Haryana high court to take suo motu cognisance of the matter and ask whether this was a campaign to target a specific community. The court also raised the question of whether this was an attempt at “ethnic cleansing”.This alarming image is perhaps unprecedented in India’s democracy. Watch this ground report to know more.
