On Thursday, September 19, Delhi-NCR saw a one-day strike in response to a call by the auto-rickshaw and cab drivers’ associations against the hike in traffic fines due to the new Motor Vehicles (Amendment) Act. A total of 44 associations and unions of passenger and goods segments including buses and trucks have come under two umbrella bodies for the strike.Several schools in Delhi-NCR remain closed today. Many commuters faced difficulties in getting public transport till late in the evening.General secretary of the Delhi Auto-Rickshaw Union and the Delhi State Taxi Union, Rajendra Soni told The Wire, ‘We oppose the central and state government on the Motor Vehicles Act. We demand that the government roll back the new Act as soon as possible.”Rishipal, an auto-rickshaw driver, said the amount charged as fines was much more than what he could afford. “Will we pay the challan by selling our household items or borrowing money?” he asked.
