On August 26, the body of 21-year-old Rabiya Saifi – a civil defence officer – was found in the Surajkund-Pali area of Faridabad.Post-mortem reports suggest that Rabiya suffered several fractures and stab wounds along with a burn mark in her abdomen area. Later, a man named Nizamuddin surrendered at the Kalindi Kunj police station in New Delhi, confessing to having committed the murder. The police say Nizamuddin claims he was married to Rabia, but the family says it has no knowledge of this and Rabiya’s lawyer, Devjyoti De, alleges that she was killed as part of a conspiracy linked to corruption in the collection of challans, or fines, levied for violations of COVID-19 protocol. Her father, Samid Ahmed, has demanded a CBI inquiry into the brutal murder of his daughter. The Faridabad police have said that an investigation is currently underway. The Wire spoke to Rabiya’s family and lawyer and attempted to reach out to police officials regarding the allegations being raised, but they were not available.
