The All India Football Federation (AIFF) on September 2 got a former player as its president for the first time in its 85-year history when Kalyan Chaubey trounced the legendary Bhaichung Bhutia in the election for the top post.
What was shocking was that Bhutia, one of India’s best players, got just one vote out of the total 34. Just a day after the election, Manvendra Singh, who was contesting for the vice-president’s post of AIFF, alleged that Kiren Rijiju – the former sports minister and current law minister – held a meeting of all the voting members and influenced the election.
