On March 2, a group of concerned citizens visited four night shelters that have been turned into relief camps by the Arvind Kejriwal-run state government for victims of the Delhi riots. They visited two relief camps set up in Delhi’s Mansarovar Park, one in Shastri Park and one in Pushta Usmanpur. All these areas are at least 6 km from the riot-affected areas. Reportedly, there are a few community-run relief camps situated within a few meters of the affected areas also.Upon speaking with the volunteers at government-run relief camps, it was found that not even one riot victim has been hosted by these camps since they were set up. “Not a single entry has been made,” a volunteer at the relief camp for women in Mansarovar Park said. “We have all the facilities for food, shelter and toilets. We even have the provision of lockers for their belongings” .“We have given advertisements in the newspapers also, yet there is nobody,” said a male volunteer at the camp set up for men in the same area. “We have been asked to take their information and enrol them also”.While the exact reason of victims not showing up at the relief camps is unknown, it is suspected, by the people who visited the area, that the considerable distance at which they are located is not conducive to the victims of the gruesome violence that North-East Delhi has seen in the past few weeks.Watch the video testimonies of volunteers at the government-run relief camps. This video was produced by Varun Chouhan, Pranav Sawhney, Abhilash Sahu and Lakshay.
