A 29-year-old Kuki woman who survived a vicious attack on May 4 by a Meitei mob in Imphal – that killed her husband and mother-in-law – describes what happened when she was beaten by men swinging wooden rods and left for dead on the road. Nancy Chingthiannang’s husband and mother in law were murdered. Even a one year old child of a relative was hit and beaten.Nancy needed brain surgery to remove the clots on her brain. She spent 9 days in ICU in an Imphal hospital and nearly two weeks more in the AIIMS Trauma Centre in Delhi. In this 35 minute interview, Nancy is accompanied by her sister-in-law Jamngaihkim Gangte, who was there when the mob attacked their family and witnessed her brother and mother being killed. This is a first person account of a harrowing experience. Nancy had been married for only five months when she was brutally widowed. Kim is a 20 year old college student who’s seen her mother and brother killed.I deliberately won’t tell their story. These brave young women had the strength and composure to tell it themselves. They deserve to be heard directly. It’s the least we owe them.
