Journalist Alishan Jafri speaks with Delhi University professor Apoorvanand and activist Harsh Mander about the recent crackdown on Bengali Muslims under Assam chief minister Himanta Biswa Sarma. In recent months, Bengali-speaking Muslims– especially in Assam – have faced one of the harshest crackdowns in years. Thousands of homes have been demolished in eviction drives, displacing families who have lived on the land for generations. While Sarma defends these actions as a fight against “illegal infiltration,” rights groups and political opponents argue this is ethnic and religious profiling aimed at Bengali Muslims ahead of elections. Similar patterns of harassment have also been reported in Delhi, raising fears of a wider campaign that undermines citizenship rights and deepens communal divisions.
