Parakala Prabhakar, commentator and political analyst, who has closely studied the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of voter lists, speaks to M.K. Venu, founding editor, The Wire, about why the SIR must be scrapped and what the opponents of the process are not getting about it.“I am not asking for scrapping of SIR because some people are being deleted – would it be OK if those people are included?” he says, pointing out that the Uttar Pradesh chief minister has opposed the SIR too, “but not because of the process itself – because he thinks it is deleting Hindu votes.”He explains that the process of scrapping the exclusionary process can only work if those who support the Modi-BJP regime turn also against the SIR. Does it mean that every opponent of the SIR must show up at Ramlila Maidan? No, he says, but the message about why it is dangerous to Indian democracy needs to reach those who support the present regime as well.Listen in to understand Prabhakar’s arguments against the SIR – and how he thinks those who are against it must take the issue to the public.
