New Delhi: At least six people were killed in the September 6 collapse of a five-storey building which mainly housed college students in South West Delhi’s Satya Niketan, near Delhi University’s South Campus.Eleven people were pulled out of the building and taken to the JPN Apex Trauma Centre at AIIMS, reports said. Four were immediately declared brought dead. Two succumbed to injuries later. The injured are being treated at Safdarjung hospital and AIIMS.There is speculation on more students being trapped in the rubble.Delhi police officials have registered a first information report against the owner of the accommodation, Anand Bansal.The Hindu has quoted residents as having said that the building, which comprises a basement and five more floors, is at least 50 years old. Officials have been quoted variously as having said that the building only had permission to construct till the first floor.This morning, Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta said “approximately 80% of the debris had been cleared” from the building and “only the rubble from the basement remains”.Gupta added that the standing building, which appears extremely dangerous, will be demolished once the debris are cleared. “A structural audit will be conducted of all such buildings, and strict action will follow. A policy is also being drafted requiring owners of old buildings to submit structural audit reports and certify their safety before operating PGs, nursing homes, schools or other commercial establishments. Officials found responsible for negligence will also face immediate action,” she said.Congress MP Pawan Khera has called the tragedy avoidable, alleging a delay in response. He posted on X:The BJP regime is a kill-machine.It failed to prevent the completely avoidable tragedy that struck Satya Niketan yesterday. And when tragedy struck, the government’s so-called first responders – fire brigade, ambulances and NDRF – took hours to reach the spot, wasting precious time that could have saved lives.What greater indictment of the system than this: a Blinkit ambulance reached the spot before the government’s first-response teams.The BJP is the face of apathy, lethargy and criminal incompetence.And ordinary people pay the price.Cockroach Janata Party spokesperson Saurav Das has also highlighted the lack of response from the prime minister days after a public event at Delhi University. He wrote:“Just two days ago, an entire PR blitz was organised at a DU college for the Prime Minister. Today, DU students are dead, severely injured, and trapped under the rubble of Satya Niketan horror. And not a SINGLE WORD from the Prime Minister.”
