New Delhi: At least five people were killed after the roof of a three-storey under-construction warehouse in Kolkata’s Taratala area collapsed on Wednesday (June 24). According to local reports, more than 40 people were trapped under the debris, more than 20 of whom were rescued and undergoing treatment at the SSKM Hospital. At least two more persons are critical, West Bengal chief minister Suvendu Adhikari announced while speaking to reporters in Kolkata, and 18 of the injured were out of danger. The workers were engaged in construction work when the roof of the building collapsed. Locals were the first to reach the site. Police, fire services and rescue teams arrived at the spot soon after they were informed.Adhikari too visited the site and said that 12 to 15 people were still trapped inside. In a press conference afterwards, he announced that all construction work in Kolkata (urban) will be suspended till July 31.Adhikari said that preliminary findings indicated there were flaws in the sanctioned design of the five-storey steel-framed structure.“The plan was sanctioned by the previous government on January 17. According to the corporation engineer, the plan was defective. The owner of the land is SMPA. The lease was given to Shambhunath Behera and partners,” Adhikari said at the presser.“Construction in all the houses or multi-storey buildings within the Kolkata municipal area approved by the previous regime, particularly those for commercial purposes or where construction work involves filling up water bodies, will remain suspended until July 31. Each of these will be audited,” the chief minister announced, as quoted by Anandabazar Patrika.Similar steps will be taken in the urban areas of Howrah and Bidhannagar later, he said.According to PTI, the fire department said that they received the first call at 12.20 pm. Teams of the army, National Disaster Response Force, State Disaster Response Force, other disaster management teams, and the municipal corporation are present at the site.“We are following the cries for help coming from under the debris. At the same time, we are assuring the trapped people that they will be rescued soon,” a member of the Kolkata Police disaster management group told the news agency.“We will definitely look into the causes of the accident and whether there were any irregularities. But right now, the priority is to rescue as many victims as possible,” West Bengal Minister Indranil Khan told PTI.
