New Delhi: New Delhi is ranked 120th out of the 173 cities surveyed worldwide, according to the newly released Global Liveability Index for 2026, published by the Economist Intelligence Unit (EIU).Mumbai is at 121, just behind New Delhi. Chennai and Bengaluru trailed further at 123 and 127, respectively.Notably, Delhi and Mumbai occupied the same spots last year as well.According to the survey, Copenhagen remains world’s most liveable city while Vienna and Melbourne occupied the second and third place, respectively.Researchers looked at 30 indicators grouped into five categories: stability, healthcare, culture and environment, education, and infrastructure, with the aim of showing how comfortable these cities are to live in.In the latest edition of the survey, conducted in May 2026, the average liveability score across all cities is 76.1 out of 100, the same as last year.Damascus is at the bottom of the index at 173 and Tripoli is one spot above at 172, Dhaka is at 171, Karachi is at 170 and Algiers is at 169. Lagos, Port Moresby, Kyiv, Harare and Tehran are at 168, 167, 166, 165 and 164 positions, respectively.“The bottom ten cities in our index have nearly all been affected by war or poverty, or both, with all scoring particularly poorly for stability,” the report mentioned. The key findings of the report include the fact that Iran war has undermined stability across the Gulf region, contributing to a one-point decline in the average liveability score for cities in the Middle East and North Africa (MENA). “Muscat in Oman and Kuwait City have seen the biggest decline in our rankings, while Tehran (Iran) has fallen into the bottom ten cities,” it mentioned.Besides that the report highlighted that Chinese cities have climbed up the rankings due to their improved scores for healthcare. Similarly, New York’s stability score has also improved, reflecting years of falling crime rates and a reduced risk of a major terrorist attack.
