New Delhi: United States Trade Representative (USTR) Jamieson Greer has said that the signing of the trade deal between India and the US is not “imminent”, despite the two countries being in final stage of talks, reported Indian Express. After meeting Union commerce and industry minister Piyush Goyal during the G20 trade minister’s meeting on October 1, Greer said that the two countries have identified a “universe of items that are sticking points.”“So we had a very constructive conversation, Minister Goyal and myself. Our staff is meeting right now, since they are in the country and we are here. We are continually trying to finish the trade deal with India. I would characterise it as we say in the US, we are in the short strokes. So I think we are toward the end of it. The President (Trump) and Prime Minister (Modi) did have a very constructive call yesterday morning US time,” said Greer during a press briefing.“At the same time, I don’t think there’s something imminent, but we truly have identified the universe of items that are sticking points. We are working diligently toward them. My sense is that the President, the Prime Minister may have another call, very soon on this, just to assess progress in where we are,” he added.Greer’s remarks came just a day after prime minister Narendra Modi spoke to US president Donald Trump by phone on September 30, in the first conversation between the two leaders since Trump signed legislation giving Washington the power to impose tariffs of up to 100% on countries buying Russian oil and gas.The US and India had announced a framework for an interim trade agreement on February 7, 2026, with the broader objective of negotiating a bilateral trade agreement. But the interim agreement has not been finalised.
