According to diplomatic sources, Trump’s tweet could be a sign that US was serious about its ‘deadlines’ given to Pakistan taking action against the Taliban and Haqqani network.
In August, Trump pledged a stepped-up military campaign against Taliban insurgents and signalled the US would send more troops to fight in what is the longest war in its history.
With Afghan forces improving and on the offensive, US commanders have more freedom to attack the Taliban and insurgents no longer threaten any major urban centres.
While the ultimate objective still remains political reconciliation in Afghanistan, the route by which the parties get there will be vastly different under the Trump administration.
If implemented, the new policy will likely lead to confrontation with nuclear-armed Pakistan, but that does not mean the US should shy away from holding Islamabad’s feet to the fire.
