New Delhi: A viral video showing a group of girls, who are said to be state-level kabaddi players, serving themselves food from large utensils placed in a toilet at Saharanpur stadium in Uttar Pradesh has drawn angry reactions on social media. In the video, the girls dressed in their sporting wear can be seen serving themselves rice, dal and other dishes from large vessels placed on the floor. The vessels are right next to a row of men’s urinals. A plate full of pooris is also seen placed on a piece of paper without any lid. From the presence of a large kadai, it appears the food may have been cooked inside the toilet itself. The incident took place on September 16 at the sub-junior girls’ kabaddi tournament at Dr Bhimrao Ambedkar Stadium. The tournament was hosted from September 16 to 18 in which over 300 players from 16 divisions of the state took part.In UP’s Saharanpur, video of players attending the state level girl’s U-16 Kabaddi tournament being served food kept on the floor of toilet at the sports stadium has surfaced.Video by @sachingupta787 pic.twitter.com/12dYRlMofH— Piyush Rai (@Benarasiyaa) September 20, 2022The Wire, however, has not been able to independently verify the authenticity of the video. The Congress party hit out at the apathy of authorities and the treatment meted out to young athletes. “Daughters who play Kabaddi for UP are being served food kept in toilet. Taking to Twitter, she wrote:Such a shame! Can’t provide basic facilities to our sportspersons but expect them to win medals for the state/nation. Hope @UPGovt takes immediate action and sacks the officials responsible for this. https://t.co/wVgqaM1FY4— Priyanka Chaturvedi🇮🇳 (@priyankac19) September 20, 2022Describing it as “a gross insult to players”, Rashtriya Lok Dal (RLD) leader Jayant Chaudhary on Twitter wrote, “It seems that those who enjoy power only see their convenience, everyone else should be self-reliant!”Taken by the backlash, the Uttar Pradesh administration suspended Saharanpur district sports officer Animesh Saxena, and a probe has been ordered.District magistrate Akhilesh Singh said additional district magistrate (finance and revenue) Rajnish Kumar Mishra would conduct a probe and submit a report in three days.Singh said, “The rice and pooris were kept in a toilet. The video, which went viral on social media, showed the players taking the food kept inside the toilet.”He added that it had also come to the administration’s notice that the food was cooked on the swimming pool premises and only two cooks were engaged to prepare food for over 300 people. The food that was prepared was then stored inside the toilet, he added. The pooris were spread on a piece of paper, while the rice was half-cooked. The players could not even get adequate food, the district magistrate said.Singh has directed the probe team to speak to the athletes, get the video clip and submit a report.“The district sports officer did not inform the administration about the state-level tournament. If the administration had been informed, it would have given special attention to the competition,” he added.(With PTI inputs)
