New Delhi: Six Nepali youths serving in the Russian Army have been killed, according to Nepal’s ministry of foreign affairs.The Kathmandu Post reported that around 200 Nepalis are serving in the Russian Army in various capacities. Some of them even are recruited into the Ukrainian Army, but the exact number of such recruits is not available.The deceased have been identified as Pritam Karki of Syangja, Ganga Raj Moktan of Ilam, Raj Kumar Karki of Dolakha, Rupak Karki of Kapilvastu, Dewan Rai of Kaski and Sandeep Thapaliya of Gorkha.Kathmandu has appealed to the Russian government to send home the bodies of the slain soldiers and also requested it to immediately return other Nepali recruits to its army. A requisition has also been made for compensation to the kin of the deceased soldiers.The foreign affairs ministry also said, in a statement, that diplomatic efforts are underway to repatriate Bibek Khatri, a Nepali youth from Bardiya, currently imprisoned in Ukraine.Several videos emerged online lately showing Nepali soldiers fighting in the Russia-Ukraine war. The videos claim that each of these soldiers earns up to NPR 400,000 a month.While urging the Nepali youth not to get swayed by temptation or false information, the foreign affairs ministry said people can travel to Russia only with a No Objection Certificate (NOC) issued by the Department of Consular Services under the ministry. However, there is an exemption for those involved in government work, scholarship of the Russian government, and those in a profession or business.Nepal only allows recruitment in the Indian and British Armies in line with bilateral agreements with the respective countries.
