New Delhi: Pakistan has summoned the US charge d’affaires in Islamabad over the fact that US Ambassador to India Sergio Gor called Jammu and Kashmir “an important part of India” during his visit there.During his first visit to the Union territory, Gor said on August 19 that there is a possibility of Washington reviewing its travel advisory for Jammu and Kashmir, citing improvements in the security situation.“Kashmir is an important part of India. I am visiting the place for the first time. It is an incredibly beautiful place,” Gor also told reporters in Srinagar.Pakistan’s ministry of foreign affairs said in a statement that “a strong demarche was lodged over the factually incorrect remarks of U.S. Ambassador to India, regarding the status of Jammu and Kashmir…”.The formal protest comes at a time when the US and Pakistan are closer than ever. The foreign ministry also said that Pakistan had “strongly condemned and categorically rejected the characterisation of Jammu and Kashmir as a “part of India”.”“It was underscored that Jammu and Kashmir is an internationally recognised disputed territory, awaiting final disposition in accordance with the relevant UNSC resolutions and the aspirations of the Kashmiri people,” it said in the statement.Calling Gor’s statement “irresponsible,” Pakistan claimed to have highlighted to the US charge d’affaires that it “negated the long-standing and well-documented position of the United States on the Jammu & Kashmir dispute, and also ran contrary to the United States’ commitment to supremacy of international law and the UN Charter.”In the same statement, Pakistan also appreciated US President Donald Trump’s offer to mediate between India and Pakistan to resolve the Jammu and Kashmir dispute “in the aftermath of Marka-e-Haq.”Marka-e-Haq is the name by which Pakistan calls Operation Sindoor, the four-day military conflict with India from May 7 to May 10, 2025.“[T]he U.S. side was urged to ensure that its public statements remain consistent with the disputed status of Jammu and Kashmir,” the statement added.
