New Delhi: Indian High Commissioner to Bangladesh Dinesh Trivedi, who has been in Dhaka for two months now, met Bangladeshi Prime Minister Tarique Rahman on Monday (August 10), and the extradition of former Bangladeshi Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina was reportedly Rahman’s priority during the meeting.Bangladesh also requested the extradition of those accused of killing Osman Hadi, Daily Star reported.Trivedi’s visit to the prime minister has been called a “courtesy call”, with Bangladeshi foreign minister Khalilur Rahman, prime minister’s foreign affairs adviser Humayun Kabir and other officials also present. “Bangladesh hopes that India will expedite the process of extraditing Sheikh Hasina,” a press release from the prime minister’s press wing said, according to Bangladeshi press agency UNB.Relations between the two countries made headlines last week as Dhaka registered a strong protest against Hasina holding a controversial press interaction in New Delhi. Bangladesh had warned again India allowing this event, and issued a strongly worded statement after: “Bangladesh is outraged that the absconding convicted genocider Sheikh Hasina was allowed this evening to engage in live interaction with the media in New Delhi where she and her henchmen launched venomous vitriol against the State of Bangladesh and her people.”India has said that it had nothing to do with the event being organised, and stressed that it did not endorse any remarks made at the event about Bangladesh’s “duly constituted government”.Hasina’s August 5 remarks were reportedly also discussed this morning, and Bangladeshi foreign minister Khalilur Rahman told reporters that he had also spoken to Trivedi about it a day before. “Regarding August 5, we have clearly stated our position, and the Indian authorities have understood it seriously. They informed me of this yesterday as well, and today they told the Prime Minister the same thing,” he said.“A state has three pillars: the executive, the legislature and the judiciary. As far as convicted Hasina is concerned, her matter falls under the judiciary. A competent court of Bangladesh tried her and convicted her. What happens in the case of a convicted person is that the person is taken into custody, and if they have anything to say or anything to present in their defence, they can say it before the court. So, what Hasina did on August 5 was to show contempt towards Bangladesh’s judiciary, which is one of the pillars of the state, and the Indian government allowed her to do so. Therefore, we have said that we want all countries around the world to respect the entire structure of our state, and we hope the Indian government will understand this issue,” he continued.India has extended an invitation to Tarique Rahman to the BRICS summit in New Delhi in September, as the Bay of Bengal Initiative for Multi-Sectoral Technical and Economic Cooperation (BIMSTEC) chair. Khalilur Rahman referred to this as well as an earlier invitation from Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi to Tarique Rahman, but said no decision has been taken yet regarding dates for a visit. Trivedi too referred to the invite. Speaking to reporters after the meeting, he said, “Our invitation has already been extended. So, as I mentioned last time as well, the people of India and the Prime Minister of India are looking forward to [the visit], and are positive about it. When two leaders sit together and have a discussion, there will be issues in a democracy. If there are no issues, then it is not a democracy. There will be issues, there will be issues concerning Bangladesh, but there is only one issue for the people, and that is good relations. If there are good relations, it is a win-win situation.”“And whatever we have historically, you cannot change that. You cannot change our neighbourhood. You cannot change history. I always say that we don’t only share a border, we share dreams. We share dreams, don’t we?” he continued. “And I feel that the coming days will be good.
