New Delhi: Nearly 47 people – 15 security personnel and 25 terrorists – were killed in three districts of Jammu this year, officials said on Wednesday. They described the uptick in violence as “desperate attempts from across the border” to revive militancy in the area.The militancy-related deaths have been recorded in Rajouri, Poonch and Reasi districts, PTI reported. The dead include four Army officers, including two captains, who lost their lives in an ongoing anti-terrorist operation in Rajouri’s Bajimaal area.Ten soldiers including five commandos had died in two earlier ambushes, one in Poonch’s Mendhar on April 20 and the second in Rajouri’s Kandi forest on May 5.Another 24 people, including seven terrorists and 10 security personnel, have been killed in Rajouri this year, while 15 terrorists and five security personnel in Poonch district. Three terrorists were also killed in Reasi district, the PTI report said.According to officials, most of the terrorists were killed while trying to sneak into the Indian side of the border.The latest encounter in Rajouri comes close on the heels of another gunfight in Behrote in the Budhal area on November 17, which left one terrorist dead, the report said.The officials said that the increase in encounters was a result of massive counter-terrorist operations carried out by security agencies to thwart infiltration attempts.Across Jammu and Kashmir,121 people – including 81 terrorists and 27 security personnel – have been killed in militancy-related violence this year.This includes an Army colonel and a deputy superintendent of police (DSP) who lost their lives in a week-long operation in south Kashmir’s Anantnag district. Two other security personnel also died during this operation.
