New Delhi: A day after it was reported that the Manipur police had arrested one man in the case about the sexual assault of Kuki women, the accused’s house was reportedly set on fire by a group of women from his village.Three Kuki women were assaulted and paraded naked on May 4 by a mob of Meitei men. Two days ago, a video of the incident showing two of those women went viral on social media. Because of the public outrage, the police and state administration were forced to jump into action and make arrests – even though one of the survivor’s husband’s had filed an FIR on May 18.According to The Indian Express, on learning of Huirem Herodas Meitei’s arrest in connection with the incident seen in the video, women from his Pechi Awang Leikai village in Thoubal district decided to take action. Huirem is one of four people arrested.After coming together, the women vandalised and set on fire Huirem’s house. “Be it Meitei or other communities, as a woman, outraging a woman’s dignity is not acceptable. We cannot allow such a person to be in our society. It’s a shame to the entire Meitei community,” a Meira Paibi leader told the newspaper.Meira Paibis (women’s torch-bearers) are Meitei women’s activist and vigilante groups.
