New Delhi: Union minister R.K. Ranjan Singh’s house in Imphal was burnt down on Thursday night by a mob of over 1,000 people. The minister was not in the house at the time of the incident.“I am currently in Kerala for official work. Thankfully, nobody got injured last night at my Imphal home. The miscreants came with petrol bombs and damage has been done to the ground floor and first floor of my home,” Singh, the Union minister of state for external affairs, told ANI. “It is very sad to see what is happening in my home state. I will still continue to appeal for peace. Those indulging in this kind of violence are absolutely inhuman.”According to NDTV, the mob managed to reach the minister’s house in the Kongpa area despite the curfew. There were nine security escorts personnel, five security guards and eight additional guards on duty at the house.“We couldn’t prevent the incident as the mob was overwhelming and we couldn’t control the situation. They threw petrol bombs coming in from all directions.. from the bye lane behind the building and from the front entrance. so we simply couldn’t control the mob,” L. The majority Meiteis have demanded Scheduled Tribe status in the state, and the Kukis have protested this demand as they believe it will impinge on their rights.The violence has shown little signs of coming to a close. More than 150 people have lost their lives and over 40,000 displaced from their homes. Both communities have expressed serious distrust towards the government and its actions, even refusing to join the Union government’s peace committee.
