New Delhi: Authorities in Manipur do not know the exact number of weapons and ammunition that were looted from police stations and armouries because the registers that maintained the records were “either destroyed or taken away”, according to Economic Times. At least 4,000 weapons have been stolen since the violence between the Meitei and Kuki communities began on May 3 – including assault rifles like INSAS and AK-47s. Of these, less than half – around 1,800 – have been recovered so far, the newspaper reported.During search operations conducted by security forces in Tamenglong, Imphal East, Bishnupur, Kangpokpi, Churachandpur and Kakching districts on June 24, “three 51mm and three 84 mm mortar shells were found in a paddy field of Sahumphal village and an IED was found in a paddy field between Kangvai and S Kotlian villages”, according to ET. The mortar shells and IED were deactivated by the bomb disposal team.Nearly two months have passed since ethnic clashes began in Manipur, but there are no signs of the violence abating. Hundreds have been killed and thousands have been displaced in the state, which has seen a civil war-like situation.
