New Delhi: Four people were allegedly shot dead by armed men in Manipur’s Valley district of Thoubal in a fresh violence that also saw several injured on Monday, January 1. The incident prompted the authorities to re-impose curfew across Valley districts.“Due to developing law and order condition in the district and to prevent any untoward incidents and loss of life and property, and further as a precautionary measure, the curfew relaxation order dated December 31 stands cancelled and full curfew is imposed in all areas of Imphal West district with immediate effect,” said an order issued by the districts magistrate.Similarly, curfew was reimposed in Thoubal, Imphal East, Kakching, and Bishnupur districts.Chief minister N. Biren Singh confirmed the incident. “I express my immense sadness over the killing of innocent people. We have mobilised police teams to catch the culprits. I fold my hands and appeal to the residents of Lilong (where the incident happened) to help the government in finding the culprits. I promise that the government will do everything in its power to give justice under the law,” he said in a video statement.Singh called for an urgent meeting of all ministers and ruling party MLAs.According to PTI, officials said gunmen, who are yet to be identified, arrived wearing camouflage and opened fire, targeting locals. Five people were also injured and are hospitalised. Following the attack angered locals set some vehicles on fire.Since the outbreak of ethnic violence on May 3 last year, more than 180 people have been killed and several hundred injured in the state.Note: This is a developing story and will be updated as and when new information arrives.
