New Delhi: Former Union minister of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) government R.K. Singh has demanded answers from Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Defence minister Rajnath Singh as to how many patrolling points the Indian army has “given up” since 2014. His allegations come amid recent reports that Chinese People’s Liberation Army (PLA) personnel are denying Indian forces access to key patrolling points along the Line of Actual Control (LAC) in Upper Subansiri district of Arunachal Pradesh.Singh, a former IAS officer and former MP from Bihar’s Arrah, posted a video on X saying he has worked eight years in the Ministry of Defence, and seven in the Ministry of Home Affairs. “I read a report today which gives me worry, and it should worry all the citizens of our country. It appears that we have abandoned a patrolling point called Shera 5 in Taksing in Arunachal, and the Chinese have established a prominent position there,” he said.“The Chinese and us have a dispute about the border – a dispute that has been carrying on ever since the Chinese occupied Aksai Chin. The 1962 war was about that; the Chinese do not accept the McMahon Line as the border. They are also not willing to demarcate the Line of Actual Control (LAC) because they have huge claims into our territory, including the entire Arunachal Pradesh.” Singh explained.pic.twitter.com/DYcLtb4lVg— R. Our patrols go up to points along our perceived Line of Actual Control and Chinese patrols come up to patrolling points along their perceived Line of Actual Control,” the former minister said.These points, he said, act as a marker for when the negotiations happen. “That’s why patrolling up to these points is essential, so that our claim line is specifically communicated to the other side.”The concern, Singh noted, was that when a patrolling point along India’s claim line is abandoned, and the Chinese occupy it, “it means you have given up your claim”. Singh’s claims come after a People’s Party of Arunachal (PPA)-led fact-finding team in Arunachal Pradesh found that the Chinese PLA have occupied the Shera 5 Point near Taksing – a designated Indian patrolling point – denying Indian forces access, and are steadily expanding control over Indian grazing and hunting grounds along the LAC.The Arunachal Times reported that Indian and Chinese troops had a physical confrontation at the site in 2023. The Indian forces subsequently withdrew and have not returned. PLA troops later reportedly entered and dismantled the remaining Indian markers.Similarly, Nanga Pahar, traditionally used by the Nah and Mara communities for hunting and yak rearing, has been declared a strictly prohibited zone for local residents.The fact-finding committee has said that “this restriction has given the PLA greater freedom to push forward. The nature of the intrusions is well calculated, gradual and persistent, following a familiar pattern seen over several years.”So far, the Indian Army and Arunachal Pradesh chief minister Pema Khandu have denied the claims and rejected the reports.Meanwhile, Singh has demanded answers from the government. “I want to know; the nation wants to know how many other patrolling points the government has given up since 2014. Is this the only patrolling point which the government has given up and the Chinese have occupied? Or are there other patrolling points which this government gave up, patrolling points which were being patrolled where our patrols used to go before 2014?” the former minister asked.“The Defence Minister and Prime Minister need to answer how many patrolling points have been abandoned since 2014 because giving up the claim on any points is not possible without the approval of the Prime Minister,“ he alleged.Singh had joined the BJP in 2013 and served across several ministries in the National Democratic Alliance-led Union government that came to power in 2014. However, he was suspended by the party in 2025 after he repeatedly criticised BJP leaders during the Bihar Assembly elections and accused the Nitish Kumar government of a power scam purchasing electricity from Adani Power.Prior to joining the BJP, he served as the Home Secretary from 2011 to 2013. He was also the Secretary, Department of Defence Production, in the defence ministry from 2009 to 2011.
