New Delhi: Chief of Defence Staff (CDS) General Anil Chauhan said on Thursday (April 9) that the armed forces have concluded discussions on the formation of Integrated Theatre Commands. Chauhan said that a formal proposal may be submitted to defence minister Rajnath Singh within a week, reported Deccan Herald. On the sidelines of Ran Samwad, an annual military conference, in Bengaluru, General Chauhan said that all discussions on Exercise Tiranga have concluded and chances are that the proposal might be submitted within the next one week.Exercise Tiranga is the name for deliberations and discussions on establishing these commands between the CDS and the three service chiefs over three years.Chauhan said that while some differences exist, the defence minister will be presented the final plan. Thereafter the plan will also be submitted to the Cabinet Committee on Security before operationalising the long-awaited Integrated Theatre Commands.“Our move towards joint structures and theatre commands – with planning now reported to be more than 90% complete,” Air Marshal Asutosh Dixit, Chief of Integrated Defence Service has earlier said on Thursday, reported Deccan Herald. The Union government had tasked General Chauhan and his predecessor General Bipin Rawat to start Integrated Theatre Commands while abolishing 17 individual commands shared between the Army (7), Air Force (7) and Navy (3).The objective behind this move was to improve operational efficiency and better resource management. This is hoped to be achieved with the formation of three integrated theatre commands to look after Western border (for tackling threats from Pakistan), Northern border (China) and the Maritime domain (Sea threats).
