New Delhi: At least one person has reportedly died and two others were injured in a fresh firing between “armed rioters” and the Indian Army in the border area of Imphal West and Kangpokpi district in Manipur, the Indian Express reported.An army spokesperson told the newspaper that the incident started at around 5.30 am on Thursday (June 29) following an attack on the Kuki village, Haraothel.“While enroute to the site, our columns drew fire from armed rioters. The troops responded in a calibrated manner to prevent any collateral damage. Swift action by the troops resulted in cessation of firing. Additional columns have been moved to the area. Unconfirmed reports indicate some casualties,” said the spokesperson.The heavy firing continued till around 9 am, the report said.One person from the Meitei community is reported to have been killed, the report said.According to NE India Today, armed micreants also attacked Tangnaum and L Munlai village under the Kangpokpi district on Thursday morning.Police sources told Deccan Herald that security forces have rushed to the spot and a search operation for the armed persons was underway.Also read: A Month Since Amit Shah’s Visit to Manipur, People He Met Say HM Hasn’t Kept His PromisesThe incident happened on the day when Congress leader Rahul Gandhi is in Manipur on a two-day visit.Gandhi reached Churachandpur, one of the worst violence-affected districts in Manipur, via a helicopter on Thursday.He plans to visit relief camps and meet survivors of the ethnic violence over the course of two days.Ethnic violence which started in early May in Manipur has continued to make its presence felt, paralysing life in the state in which almost 200 people have died and over 60,000, displaced.Internet services remain suspended.
