New Delhi: Olympic bronze medal winning wrestlers Sakshi Malik and Bajrang Punia, who have been at the forefront of the protest to demand the swift arrest of Wrestling Federation of India (WFI) chief and BJP MP Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh, have both rubbished claims that they have abandoned the protest. While Punia shared an image of this news update by the news agency ANI and said that this was “just a rumour,” Malik shared an Aaj Taak screenshot and said that she was fulfilling her duty to the Railways along with the protest. pic.twitter.com/FWYhnqlinC— Sakshee Malikkh (@SakshiMalik) June 5, 2023Malik also spoke to the news agency ANI, explaining that she will fulfil responsibilities as first Officer on Special Duty in the Railways without giving up her role in the protests, which she added would continue until justice is given.Malik told ANI that the minor girl has not taken back her FIR either and that such rumours intended to discredit their protest. This comes a day after a delegation of wrestlers met Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Saturday. The wrestlers asked for a strong chargesheet to be filed quickly, along with Singh’s arrest, the Indian Express reported.Amit Shah assured the wrestlers that the law remains the same for everyone, NDTV reported. “Let the law take its own course,” he reportedly told the wrestlers. The meeting, which began at 11 pm and lasted for more than an hour, was attended by Punia, Sakshi Malik, Sangita Phogat and Satyawart Kadian who have been spearheading the protests against Singh, according to NDTV.Singh has been accused of sexually assaulting several adult women wrestlers and one minor. The police have filed two FIRs against him but no arrests have been made so far. Singh has gone as far as to say that ‘under the leadership of seers, he will force the government to change the (POCSO) law if it is misused against him’.Wrestler Bajrang Punia, meanwhile, said that wrestlers will give a call for another mahapanchayat soon. He was speaking at an event in Sonepat on Sunday, the Tribune reported.Punia was accompanied by former J&K governor Satya Pal Malik, Bhim Army chief Chandra Shekhar Azad Ravan, Rashtriya Lok Dal (RDL) leader Jayant Chaudhary, farmer leader Gurnam Singh Charuni, and others during the ‘sarva samaj samarthan panchayat’ held in Sonepat’s Mundlana.Addressing the event in support of the wrestlers, Punia requested speakers not to announce any decision, saying grapplers will be calling a mahapanchayat in another 3-4 days. “We will hold one Mahapanchayat and will give a call for that. We will decide the venue. We want to bring everyone together for that Panchayat, we don’t want us to be divided,” he said.He said their battle was not for any particular caste, but for honour and respect. “If we remain divided, we cannot win,” he said. This article, first published at 12.15 pm, was republished at 3 pm with updates.
