New Delhi: Students and activists associated with the Students’ Federation of India (SFI) and All India Students’ Association (AISA) have accused the Delhi Police of illegally detaining hundreds of protesters and subjecting many of them to brutally harassment and beatings amid their planned protests against the Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar.According to SFI, hundreds were detained in police vans at Surajmal Stadium, Nangloi, Delhi, including All India president Adarsh M Saji, Delhi state secretary Sooraj Elamon, and SFI leaders including Abhijith Manilal, Simran, Anil, Sharanya, Sant among others. The group alleged that the detainees were “tortured” inside “cage-like” police vans. Meanwhile, SFI Delhi Secretary Sooraj, CEC member Abhijith and others were allegedly detained from Connaught Place, brutally beaten up and taken to Haryana borders.Visuals shared by SFI show many protesters being forcefully picked, detained and injured in the process. One video shared by the student body showed blood streaming from Saji’s forehead, while another video showed a protester lying unconscious.One of the detainees is conscious and Police is not ready to open the cages. We demand the violence on detainees to be stopped immediately,” AISA said in a statement.Despite the continuous police crackdown, the student organisations have remained steadfast in their demands, and continue their protest march in the national capital.The Supreme Court today held a Sunday hearing and ordered the Delhi government to remove the boards announcing Section 163 (prohibition on public movement) outside the court premises. It also barred Delhi Police from making more illegal detentions, following the mass arrests of thousands on Friday and Saturday.The police detentions have continued nonetheless.Earlier today, Communist Party of India (Marxist) MP John Brittas was detained mid-address to the press in central Delhi. He was dragged away by a heavy police deployment, visuals shared by news agency IANS showed. On Saturday, police detained scores of protesters at various checkpoints as they attempted to enter central Delhi. As per media reports, more than 7,000 protesters were detained, including several leaders who had called for the demonstration such as Abhijeet Dipke, Ashutosh Ranka, Saurabh Das and Neha Bora.
