Jaipur: A priest of a temple in Bukna village of Rajasthan’s Karauli district succumbed to burns on Thursday night after he was allegedly set ablaze by five accused on Wednesday over a land issue.Karauli police arrested the main accused Kailash Meena on Friday, and a team led by an additional superintendent of police of the district was formed to investigate the matter further and to nab others involved in the crime.“The main accused, identified as Kailash Meena, has been arrested while another accused was rounded up,” the Tribune quoted superintendent of police, Karauli, Mridul Kachhawa, as saying.The deceased Babu Lal Vaishnav (55) had been farming on 15-bigha land of Radha Krishna Temple Trust, where he was serving as a priest. The accused had allegedly tried to encroach upon the land and were erecting a shed on the land on Wednesday. When the altercation broke out, the accused poured petrol on the priest and set him on fire, according to a report in The Hindu.The priest succumbed to burns on Thursday night at Sawai Man Singh Hospital in Jaipur. The police have been investigating the matter based on the statement made by Vaishnav before his death. The police had registered a case of attempt to murder against the five persons initially. And, it was later converted to that of a murder. The priest’s body was taken to the village after post-mortem for cremation on Friday.Political rowWith the issue gaining traction politically, Rajasthan chief minister Ashok Gehlot assured family members that no guilty person in the case would be spared. Taking to Twitter, Gehlot, who also holds home portfolio, said, “Vaishnav’s murder is unfortunate and condemnable. There is no place for such an act in a civilised society. The main accused has been arrested and further action is in progress.”BJP state president Satish Poonia accused the Congress government of neglecting the law and order situation in the state. “There is no fear of law among criminals who are roaming freely under Congress rule. People are living in fear while criminals have no fear. This is the situation when the chief minister himself is holding the home portfolio,” the Tribune quoted him as saying.Former chief minister Vasundhara Raje in a statement said the crime graph in the state was rising, and it was clear that no woman, child, elderly person, or a Dalit would feel safe in the state.
