The Cockroach Janata Party (CJP)’s movement resumed at Jantar Mantar in Delhi on the night of July 20 after a tumultous day spent attempting to reach parliament. The protest, held on day one of the monsoon session, took place amid prohibitory orders under Section 163 of the BNSS imposed by the Delhi Police. Earlier in the day, the CJP’s Saurav Das and Ashutosh Ranka met Union health minister J.P. Nadda as talks began between both sides.Protesters were pushed back forefully with police lathi-charge as they approached the parliament complex in central Delhi.CJP founder Abhijeet Dipke officially called off the march to parliament on Monday evening. Later, at night, CJP spokesperson Ashutosh Ranka announced that their protest had resumed at Jantar Mantar, which had been dismantled by the Delhi Police after a massive lathi-charge.The Wire’s reporters on the ground said earlier in the day that there was significant police presence at a barricaded Jantar Mantar and around but that a lakh had gathered outside the barricades to march to the parliament building anyway.Environmentalist Sonam Wangchuk’s fast remains at a crucial point at the day’s end. He has said he would continue with the protest into the 23rd day. Three AISA students ended their hunger strike earlier in the day.There is no intimation yet of the government’s response to the letter of demands submitted by CJP to Nadda. There are also reports of protests in solidarity with the Delhi protesters in Kolkata and Goa.
