New Delhi: Policemen near Nizammudin were seen stopping auto rickshaws with students in them, without telling them why they were being stopped, in the late afternoon of July 23.While some auto rickshaws have been carrying students to the protest site at Jantar Mantar where youth have gathered in answer to the Cockroach Janata Party’s call for the resignation of education minister Dharmendra Pradhan, some others were carrying people to other destinations.The Wire spoke to a particular duo who were trying to visit a museum when police stopped them. The two were let go after they were questioned for a while.Policemen discouraged videography at the site where they were stopping the auto rickshaws and asked this reporter to ride ahead.The policeman who asked this reporter to ride ahead as others stopped students at Nizamuddin. Video: Atul Ashok Howale.Another report said that students in central Delhi have said that they were stopped at about 5 km from the protest site and were not allowed to go in.Protesters will need to take autorickshaws among thinning transport options as the Delhi Metro stations that could lead to the Jantar Mantar site are all closed.Police in the Hindu report is quoted as having said that officers were “only stopping students who are going for the protest as Section 144 (now Section 163 of the BNSS) is in place.”“We are making them understand that they could get injured over there,” the policeman said.Injuries in and around the protest site were perpetrated by police on July 20, through wanton lathicharge, tear gassing and other methods.
