New Delhi: Roughly seven hours after their meeting with the Union health minister J.P. Nadda of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), the Cockroach Janata Party (CJP) has clarified that it “has not heard” from the government on its demands.“We are still waiting. The protest is continuing at Jantar Mantar (outside Kerala House) in the meanwhile,” said CJP spokesperson Saurav Das. Earlier, Das and co-spokesperson Ashutosh Ranka said that demands of the protesters have been conveyed, including the immediate resignation/sacking of Union education minister Dharmendra Pradhan, to the government.Das underlined that the peaceful protests would continue until the demand is met.“Ashutosh Ranka and I have been at J.P. Nadda’s residence since 12 noon. The demands have been conveyed, including immediate resignation/ sacking of Dharmendra Pradhan,” Das wrote.He added: “The minister assured us he will discuss this at the appropriate level. The meeting took place in a cordial atmosphere. An initial verbal discussion was held in detail with their delegation, and they submitted a written petition to me around 4 PM. I have requested all the protesters to end their sit-in and assist the administration in restoring normalcy,” Nadda wrote on X.Earlier in the day, Das posted that Ranka and he are on their way to meet Union minister J.P. Nadda after the government purportedly reached out to the protesters for talks on the morning of July 20.“The government had reached out for talks in the morning. Our demands are clear. The youth has gathered in huge numbers. We shall win!” Das posted on X near noontime, noting this was the update at 11.52 am.The CJP’s movement has, however, focused on the ouster of education minister Dharmendra Pradhan. All associated movements have also focused on the education system, drawing the obvious question as to why Nadda must be the minister to meet them.Das eventually posted on X saying that he and fellow spokesperson Ranka waited for more than two hours before Nadda met them at his house for ten minutes.“While we submit a written letter with our demands, he has assured us that he will meanwhile speak internally. We are in that process. There is news of mass detention etc.” Das wrote.Ranka tweeted that Nadda “requested some time to align with their leadership” on the following demands:– Immediate release of Sonam Wangchuk,– Dharmendra Pradhan’s resignation, and– Rs 1 crore compensation for all NEET aspirants who died by suicide.Ranka also posted on X that it was only late last night that the DCP New Delhi reached out to the outfit to open a communication channel with the government.“There were more serious discussions only from today 6AM, and only around 11:45AM was there an alignment on meeting Nadda ji. Hence I request you to kindly allow me to leave the hospital, even if temporarily, so that I can join the march to the Parliament – Sansad Chalo, this morning.”Wangchuk’s wife, Gitanjali Angmo, was quoted by a news agency, ANI, as having said today that the focus should be on the peaceful conduct of the march.“We will focus on this march. Three points are very important today. First, we will focus on conducting the march peacefully. Let us stay focused on the issue- the issue of education, which is a vital need for this country and remain vigilant,” she said.Earlier, Angmo said that he was ready to end the fast if “political leaders meet him at hospital and assure him that they will raise the issue of education accountability during Parliament session.”Wangchuk has since then tweeted the conditions under which his fast will be broken.In a missive, handwritten on a piece of tissue paper and posted on Twitter, Wangchuk said the first situation which can lead him to break his fast is if the government takes accountability of the “failures” in the education system, especially the recent NEET question paper leaks.The alternative is that political leaders assure him that the paper leak issue would be raised in the parliament.The third, Wangchuk said, is that top political leaders visit him at the hospital and give assurance of the other two conditions.Angmo had approached the Delhi High Court on Sunday seeking to move Wangchuk to a private hospital.Three students from the AISA who were fasting alongside Wangchuk have broken their hunger strike today.Note: This report is being frequently updated.
