New Delhi: A migrant worker from West Bengal was allegedly stabbed in Madhya Pradesh’s Sagar for speaking Bengali, the Times of India has reported.Thirty-seven-year-old Syed Sk, a resident of Paharpur village, had been working as a cloth vendor in MP since 2015. On February 19, he was allegedly robbed and stabbed multiple times in Samnapur village. He was later taken to Bundelkhand hospital, where he underwent a surgery, according to the paper.Syed’s wife, Nurefa Biwi, said that he had been afraid of being targeted for speaking Bengali.“We arranged for his treatment and an FIR has been lodged. At the behest of [Lok Sabha MP] Abhishek Banerjee, we are looking after him and his family. Once he recovers, we will bring him back and rehabilitate him within the state,” Trinamool MP Samirul Islam, chairman of West Bengal Migrant Workers’ Welfare Board, told the paper.Attacks on Bengali-speaking migrant workers have been been on the rise, with right-wing goons often accusing the workers of being undocumented Bangladeshi immigrants.Earlier this month, a migrant worker from West Bengal’s Purulia district was murdered in Maharashtra’s Pune. His family claimed that he had been targeted for speaking Bengali.In January, a group of eight migrant workers from Bengal was allegedly brutally attacked and driven out of a bread factory in Chhattisgarh’s Surajpur district by Bajrang Dal members.In July 2025, over 250 Bengali speaking, predominantly Muslim, migrant workers were detained and harassed in Haryana’s Gurugram, prompting them to leave en masse for their hometowns.Similar attacks have also been reported in Odisha, Delhi, Rajasthan and Gujarat.
